If you’re looking for a three-row, family-friendly SUV, then it’s likely you’re considering the 2019 Volkswagen Atlas or the 2019 Toyota Highlander. It can be difficult to decide which one is right for you, though. Here, we compare these two models so you can figure out which one is the better option for you.

Interior Space

Cabin space is an important part of a family vehicle. Both the Atlas and the Highlander offer three rows of seats with ample room to stretch out for everyone. They also come with large cargo berths, which makes it easy to pack up any gear you may need. When it comes to actual cargo dimensions, though, the Atlas wins hands down. The Volkswagen model offers 20.6 cubic feet of cargo space behind its third-row seats compared to the Highlander’s 13.8 cubic feet. The Atlas also offers more overall cargo capacity with a maximum of 96.8 cubic feet available, whereas the Highlander only offers 83.7 cubic feet.

Technology

Keeping connected on the go is a key feature for many consumers, which is why it’s important to take a look at the technologies your potential vehicle has to offer. While both the Atlas and the Highlander come outfitted with infotainment systems on their base trims, the Atlas has more connective features. This includes Apple CarPlay™ and Android Auto™ smartphone integration, along with a larger 6.5-inch touchscreen. The Highlander has a standard 6.1-inch touchscreen. Along with these innovations, the Atlas has standard heated side mirrors and an available a 12-speaker Fender® sound system, neither of which the Highlander offers.

Safety

Both the 2019 Atlas and 2019 Highlander come standard with a range of safety and driver-assistance technologies. The Atlas offers more standard equipment than the Highlander, though. Along with its rearview camera, the Atlas has standard rain-sensing windshield wipers, Forward Collision Mitigation, Blind-Spot Monitoring, and Rear Cross-Traffic Alert — technologies the Highlander only offers on its higher trim levels.
