Tires are one of the most important parts of your car. Your vehicle’s tires mean all the difference when road conditions get rough. If the weather is good and they don’t seem too worn down, most drivers usually think it isn’t worth the time and money to replace. However, regardless of the weather, good tires help ensure your safety on the road.

Tread

The tire’s tread helps it maintain a good grip on the road, even when driving through water and debris. If the tread wears down too low, there’s a higher chance of sliding or skidding. The tread should never be worn below 1/16 of an inch. You can check the tread by either purchasing a depth gauge or by taking out a penny. If you insert a penny head-first into the tread and, and none of the tread covers Lincoln’s hair, the tread has worn dangerously low.

Newer tires have built-in indicators that run perpendicular to the tread. When it wears down, you’ll be able to see several indicators, signaling that it’s time to get new tires.

Age

Even if they still have good wear, a tire’s integrity can degrade over time, since the rubber naturally dries out and wears thin. Most manufacturers recommend that you invest in a new set of tires every 10 years, while the National Highway Traffic Safety Association prefers you to change out tires every six years.

Cracks

Sometimes cracks can form on the sidewalls, a sign of tire rot. These cracks can even run inside of the tire treads, a sure sign of tire degradation. Exposure to extreme temperatures can also lead to cracks. If you spot cracks on your car’s tires, have them replaced before they cause leaking or a dangerous blow-out.

Bulges

A tire’s sidewall can lose integrity, causing it to bulge or blister. These spots can spread further along the tire’s surface and break down completely when you’re on the road.
